At the core of Montessori philosophy is respect for the child as each child is valued as a unique individual. The Montessori method is based on understanding the needs of children’s developmental stages and principles and practices of observation in the classroom environment.
Montessori education recognizes that children learn in different
ways, and accommodates all learning styles. Children are also free
to learn at their own pace, each advancing through the curriculum as
he/she is ready, guided by the teacher with an individualized
learning plan.
Beginning at an early age, Montessori children
develop independence, orderliness, coordination, and concentration.
These habits are essential to achieve success later in life.
Classroom design, Montessori materials, and guidance from
experienced and trained teachers in a structured programme - these
all support the individual child's emerging personality - which is
essential to the development of intelligence and habit formation.
The child, teacher, and environment create a learning
triangle. The classroom is carefully prepared by the teacher to be
aesthetically pleasing and to encourage independence, freedom within
limits, and a sense of order. Through individual choice, the child
makes use of what the environment offers to develop herself/himself
interacting with the teacher when support and/or guidance is needed.
We encourage peer learning and teaching as this arrangement
also mirrors the real world, where a diversity of individuals work
and socialize with each other harmoniously. Children become part of
a close, caring community as teachers model respect, loving
kindness, offering positive guidance in a peaceful and nurturing
manner. Montessori children enjoy freedom within limits and learn to
self-regulate their emotions in addition to respecting themselves
and others. As Montessorians, we understand that internal
satisfaction drives the curiosity and interest of our children,
resulting in joyous learning that is sustainable over a lifetime.
