Montessori I to IV

Young children have a natural desire to explore and learn from the environment at their own pace. AMPS believes that the 2 years and above age group has a unique set of needs. The Transition curriculum aims to provide developmentally appropriate Montessori materials and co-curricular activities in an organised, prepared and well-resourced environment:

  • “Whole language approach” is an integrated approach which helps to develop listening skills, vocabulary, reading and writing skills.
  • We emphasise the recognition of numerals and understanding of “number concepts” by using Montessori materials.
  • Science exploration with simple experiments and geographic awareness using Montessori materials is an essential part of our curriculum.
  • Children enjoy working with integrated art activities to explore different media and textures.
  • Cultural enrichment is a big part of our curriculum with ongoing celebrations of different festivals, field days and fun events planned throughout the academic session.
  • Children enjoy daily outdoor play that involves free play as well as organised games, yoga exercises and Tae-Kwon-Do.
  • All Montessori classes provide concrete Montessori exercises which enable children to learn a rich variety of different concepts at their own pace and level of readiness.
  • The materials and exercises are arranged from simple to complex and concrete to abstract, thus enabling our teachers to challenge each child according to their ability and interest.
  • Each piece of the Montessori apparatus is designed to give children a new experience and to develop a specific concept.

Classes I & II

These classes consist of a rich amalgamation of the Montessori approach with a progressive CBSE curriculum. Children in this age group also have an opportunity to use the Montessori maths and language materials to enrich their conceptual understanding. For every subject, we engage with project based activities and emphasise theme-based learning as well.

Our Curriculum

Dr. Maria Montessori observed that it is universal among children that an astounding growth occurs in the first six years of human life. During the early years of life, the children are constructing the human being they will become, so it’s of utmost importance to provide a rich environment during their formative years. Our curriculum covers the areas below.

Exercises of Practical Life

The activities of Practical Life revolve around five key areas: Preliminary Exercises, Care of Self, Care of the Environment, Grace & Courtesy, and Control of Movement. These exercises are the foundation of the Montessori environment and help the children to learn “life skills” to become independent, confident and lifelong learners.
Through these activities of Practical Life, children develop the skills of orderliness, independence, eye-hand coordination, control of movement, and the ability to concentrate.

Sensorial

Scientifically designed materials by Dr. Maria Montessori herself, Sensorial exercises act as the keys to the universe and ‘pathways to culture.’ The Montessori Sensorial apparatus allows children to classify, organize and refine their five senses. These materials help children to sort things by size, shape, color, touch, sound, temperature and weight and help them to understand the world around them.
These exercises are mathematically graded and they isolate one quality at a time. The Sensorial materials lay a solid foundation for mathematics, geometry and arts, etc, so that children can perceive their universe with greater awareness.

Language

Montessori language materials provide the keys to the fascinating world of language and are highly effective in teaching both reading and writing to a very young child. All words are composed of sounds that can be made visible with sandpaper letters of both English and Hindi alphabets. Sandpaper letters not only guide the hand for writing - as the child traces the letter shape in the style and direction in which they are written - but they also create a ‘muscular memory’ for phonetic sounds. Metal inset exercises strengthen the ‘three-finger grasp’ and coordinate the necessary wrist movements of the child’s hand, a prerequisite for learning to write. It directly prepares the child for handwriting.
The Moveable Alphabet Box is used for building words after learning the initial consonant and vowel letter sounds with the Sandpaper exercise.

Mathematics

The Montessori Maths materials are the most glamorous of all the Montessori apparatus. These hands-on materials give our children a sensorial experience of the abstraction that is inherent in mathematics. These concrete Maths exercises allow the young children to grasp and comprehend “hard to understand” maths concepts. With the Montessori apparatus, every exercise isolates one concept and these isolated concepts integrate to form the basis for further steps in the development of a child’s mathematical understanding. Children learn the basic four maths operations – addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division – in concrete form with Golden Bead materials. They literally carry and borrow and change quantities with hands-on materials and consciously reach a new plane of understanding and development.

Cultural Curriculum

Cultural subjects include Geography, Science, Botany, and Zoology. Young children are curious by nature and exploring these subjects provides children an opportunity to satisfy their curiosity about the world and nature. Children will have an opportunity to learn different science concepts such as the plant and animal kingdom in addition to studying the continents, oceans with sandpaper, and colored globes, and the puzzle map of the world.

Co-Curricular Activities

Arts and Craft

The Montessori approach towards arts and crafts is unique. It focuses on building skills before the child is exposed to free craft: cutting, gluing, clay modeling, coloring, and painting are five foundational skills that prepare the children for the next phase of their creative journeys. Once children master basic lessons in these areas, they move on to activities that involve more steps. Teaching art appreciation and the skills associated with artistic expression is an important part of the integrated Montessori curriculum.

Music & Dance

Music ignites all areas of child development. It helps the body and mind to work together. Dance is a form of art that improves physical fitness, energy, stamina, and posture and reduces stress and anxiety.

Games

The greatest glory in living lies not in falling, but in rising every time we fall. Physical activities help to build not only our children’s health, but also strengthen teamwork, inner confidence and overall self-esteem.
